State Regulations for Ventless Gas Logs

Gas Logs by State
The majority of the existing building codes throughout the United States permit the installation of ventless gas logs and other ventless gas heating products. Forty-seven states currently allow the installation of ventless gas logs. However, some local areas make their own regulations regarding ventless gas logs and other gas products. To be sure, check with your local fuel provider before purchasing or installing a ventless gas log.

Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming specify counties and municipalities where ventless gas log installation is permitted, though it is not permitted throughout these states.

California currently does not allow ventless gas log installation, though they are in the process of creating the necessary regulations to allow it.

Montana currently does not allow any ventless gas log installation.

Are Gas Logs Safe?
Because ventless gas logs currently cannot be installed legally in some states, , there is some speculation that these gas logs may not be safe or appropriate for use in the home. However, ventless heating, including ventless gas logs, have a proven record of safety that spans over half a century. In fact, nearly all states already allow ventless gas log installation, and those that do not are currently reviewing their regulations. Many of the restrictions placed on gas logs focus on who can install them, how they can be installed, and where they can be installed.

Gas Log Standards
Concerns about the reliability of gas logs, the potential dangers of gas logs, and the effect of gas logs on inside air quality have, in part, led to many of the restrictions regarding ventless gas logs. Ironically, these very concerns have led to the standards that ensure their safety.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) maintains strict standards for ventless gas logs, along with many other products. Every gas log we sell complies with the ANSI's standard for gas logs (ANSI standard Z 21.11.2.).

Specifics on Gas Log Installation
